Syfy’s upcoming Day of the Dead series is described as “the ultimate love letter to the godfather of zombies, George A. Romero,” but it’s not really clear where the love is in this trailer. A mix of jokes that don’t quite land and generic zombie gore, the two-minute peek at the 10-episode series is less than inspiring.
When discussing the series at Comic-Con@Home, showrunners Jed Elinoff and Scott Thomas seemed aware of the weight of the legacy they’re working with, saying that working on the show gave them a feeling of “Immense excitement … and a sense of responsibility, because we’re taking on somebody’s legacy and here’s a chance to do something really special, and you don’t want to screw it up.” The trailer’s jokeyness seems to contradict that—but it’s also just a trailer and could be going for the easy gags.
Day of the Dead was announced last year, but there was little news about it until now. It’s set in the first twenty-four hours of a zombie apocalypse, as a group of strangers come together to try to survive. The cast includes Kristy Dinsmore (Vikings), Daniel Doheny (Brand New Cherry Flavor), Morgan Holmstrom (I Still See You), Natalie Malaika (Charmed), and Keenan Tracey (Bates Motel).
Day of the Dead premies on Syfy this October.
